How much is your filmwork conjucted with the musical endeavours?
Currently, I explore separatethings in each medium. In my music, my interests are primarily aesthetic andformal, where my work in video is more focused on
concept. It was different with my work in ConDemek, both the videos and musicwere generally there to serve our political message. Now, I focus on political
ideas exclusively in my video work.
How much do you want to influence the mind of listerens or audience, in whatdirection and from what reason?
With my music, I like to create a sound space where the listener's subjectivitycan take over. There's not one thing that I'm looking to evoke. I just liketo provide an atmoshphere where anything can happen, perceptually. However,Idon't thing that it's all about the mind, there is an intensely physical aspectto my music , as well, which certainly interacts with the cerebral processes.
In my video work, there is generally a definite idea or set of ideas that Iam trying to get across. My primary goal, in this regard, is to lead the viewerto question and examine political realities, to crtically evaluate our stateof being. In my most recent work BIG SIN LITTLE SIN, which is part of a collaborationwith 12 other artists, I examine the subjective nature of sin, coming to theconclusion that it really doesn't exist. I did this by going into a catholicconfessional with a hidden recording device and confessing to the priest thatI was an employee of the US defense department and that I felt guilty aboutall of the people that I had helped to kill during the
current war. The priest told me that I (my character) was fighting a worthycause, and that I had not committed a sin. This is just one example of the type
of issues that I deal with in my video work.
What are you interested in when working with random processes and noises?
One of the things that I like to explore is the dialectic relationship betweenorder and chaos. Some of the sound processing programs that I write, use randomnumber generators to control the pitch and other apsects of the sound. But withinthese chaotic number groups, other patterns emerge that are more orderly. It'sthat unresolvable tension between order and chaos that I find very interesting.I love and embrace unpredictability.
